COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT
NATIONAL FAIR HOUSING TRAINING ACADEMY
2009 IAOHRA/NAHRW JOINT CONFERENCE
Overview
The National Fair Housing Training Academy (NFHTA) is pleased to offer once again its Core Curriculum Courses Weeks 2 and 3, at the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies (IAOHRA) and the National Association of Human Rights Workers (NAHRW) joint conference to be held in Los Angeles, California, August 31 – September 3, 2009.
The courses are offered as part of the conference training agenda and are intended for Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP) investigators. The Academy’s purpose in offering the training at the conference is to create an opportunity for FHAP personnel to benefit from the overall IAOHRA conference while meeting the program requirements for weeks 2 and 3 of the NFHTA certification five-week training program.
This announcement outlines the details related to the NFHTA courses offered at the 2009 IAOHRA/NAHRW JOINT CONFERENCE.
Description of Courses
Weeks 2 and 3 are being offered at the conference. To ensure all course objectives and hours of study are met, three weeks prior to the conference pre-course assignments will be sent to registrants. Participants registering for the course will be responsible for completing the assignments in accordance with the instructor’s guidance.
The pre-course work requirement is not an additional requirement of the course; it is an alternative method for accomplishing the course objectives through distance learning.
Week 2 Training Courses – Kaaba Brunson
- The Psychological Impact of Racial Discrimination: This one-day course will explore the psychological turmoil and hurt resulting from racial discrimination.
2) Reasonable Accommodations and Modifications: This one-day course will explore the reasonable accommodation and modification provisions of the Fair Housing Act and other fair housing laws.
3) Discovery Techniques and Evidence: This three-day course will provide the techniques for conducting discovery and collecting evidence for a fair housing case.
Week 3 Training Courses – Melvin Jenkins
- Theories of Proof and Data Analysis: This course provides an overview of various theories of proof and data analysis that been applied by courts and their application to the investigative process.
- Conciliation for Investigators: This course covers the conciliation process, including fundamental principles of negotiation, legal requirements and win-win strategies.
Eligibility
Employees from state and local government civil rights agencies who receive HUD/FHAP funds to enforce fair housing are eligible to attend. Participants who did not pass week two and four courses are encouraged to retake the course.
Funding
FHAP attendance at the IAOHRA/NAHRW joint conference is voluntary thus the decision to attend the conference and the payment of conference fees are the responsibility of the FHAP agencies. This course is a HUD-Approved training and therefore FHAP funds can be utilized to cover the cost of training, however FHAP agencies must seek GTR approval in advance of registering for the course. The GTR will determine if funding is available to attend the conference.
